Omaha Hi-Lo: General Summary

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most difficult but favored poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible variation, has grown in popularity so quickly.

Omaha 8 or better starts just like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to each player. A round of wagering follows in which players can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are given out, this is known as the flop. A further round of betting happens. After all the players have either called or folded, another card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of wagering happens and then the river card is revealed. The entrants must attempt to put together the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where a few entrants often get confused. Unlike Texas Holdem, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to utilize exactly three cards from the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. No more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the best hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same concept in almost every poker game.

A low hand is more complicated, but certainly free’s up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no low hand presented, the higher hand takes the entire pot.

Although it seems difficult at the start, after a few rounds you will be agile enough to get the basic subtleties of play with ease. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha hi/lo offers an overwhelming assortment of betting options and owing to the fact that you have numerous individuals battling for the high hand, as well as a few trying for the low. If you love a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha/8.
