Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complicated but popular poker variations. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure game, has grown in popularity so quickly.

Omaha 8 or better starts exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A round of betting ensues in which players can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. Another round of wagering happens. After all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of wagering happens at which point the river card is flipped. The players will have to make the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where a number of players get confused. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player must utilize exactly 3 cards from the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the best possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the very same concept in just about every poker game.

A low hand is more complex, but really opens up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the high hand wins the entire pot.

It may seem difficult initially, following a few rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the fundamental nuances of play easily enough. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better offers an overwhelming collection of wagering possibilities and seeing that you have numerous individuals shooting for the high hand, and a few battling for the low hand.
