Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most difficult but popular poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible variation, has increased in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha Hi-Lo starts exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to every player. A round of wagering ensues in which players can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are given out, this is known as the flop. One more round of betting happens. After all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, another card is flipped on the turn. an additional sequence of betting happens at which point the river card is flipped. The entrants must attempt to put together the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where some entrants can get flustered. Unlike Texas Holdem, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player has to use exactly 3 cards on the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. No more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the strongest hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the identical approach in almost every poker game.

The low hand is more complicated, but certainly free’s up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no lower hand available, the higher hand takes the entire pot.

It may seem complicated at the outset, following a few rounds you will be able to get the fundamental nuances of play with ease. Since you have players wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha/8 offers an amazing collection of betting options and owing to the fact that you have numerous individuals shooting for the high, along with many trying for the low. If you like a game with a lot of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
