NL Texas Hold’em Poker- Who is Phil Ivey?
Phil Ivey has been labeled as the greatest poker competitor in the world by many of the top-ranked pros. He was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to Jersey before reaching the age of one. His papa taught Phil one cent-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From then on on, he was addicted to poker and wanted to learn anything he could about the game. He routinely told his elders that he was planning on being a professional poker player. Phil did not allow the negative comments from other people destroy his goal of being one of the greatest poker competitors in the world.
He began competing seriously after getting a fake ID with the name of Jerome. He honed his techniques at the poker rooms of Atlantic City. The first few years for Phil were a learning opportunity and winning wasn’t a regular outcome at the time. He made his mark at the 2000 World Series of Poker when he achieved 2 final tables and won his first World Series of Poker bracelet, in a $2, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the closing table he destroyed a number of the better known pros including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He decided to take his skills to the next level and headed out west to Las Vegas. He continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players in the world. Ivey credits his achievements to dedication and an eternal love for the game of poker. Phil says that he’s picking up skills every single day and is incredibly humble about his accomplishments. Phil admits to making errors every single session of poker and always strives to improve.
Even though Phil has come first in some large tournaments, he favors winning cash games on a normal basis.
