Omaha Hi Low: Basic Outline
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most difficult but favored poker variations. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible variation, has grown in popularity so amazingly.
Omaha hi lo starts like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to each player. A sequence of wagering ensues where gamblers can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. Another sequence of betting happens. Once all the gamblers have either called or folded, an additional card is flipped on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The entrants will have to make the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where some entrants often get baffled. Unlike Hold’em, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must utilize exactly three cards on the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the best possible hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same notion in just about every poker game.
A lower hand is more complicated, but certainly free’s up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that can be made, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no low hand presented, the high hand takes the complete pot.
It may seem complicated initially, following a few rounds you will be agile enough to get the fundamental subtleties of play with ease. Since you have players betting for the low and betting for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better offers an exciting collection of betting options and seeing that you have several players battling for the high hand, as well as a few trying for the low hand. If you love a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is worth your time to compete in Omaha hi lo.
