Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complex but favored poker games. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible variation, has expanded in popularity so quickly.

Omaha 8 or better begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A sequence of betting follows where gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. Another round of wagering ensues. Once all the players have in turn called or folded, another card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of wagering follows at which point the river card is flipped. The gamblers must attempt to put together the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where some players often get flustered. Contrasted to Hold’em, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player has to utilize precisely three cards from the board, and precisely two hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the very same notion in just about all poker games.

The lower hand is more difficult, but certainly opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that could be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no low hand presented, the higher hand takes the whole pot.

It may seem difficult initially, after a couple of hands you will be able to get the fundamental nuances of the game simply enough. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at once, Omaha hi-low provides an exciting collection of betting possibilities and seeing that you have several individuals battling for the high hand, along with many battling for the low hand.
